O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. The judges loved her voice and she was able to advance into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly from the jury. However, she suffered massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was in the bottom three, followed by the in the bottom two. Judges were amazed by her performance, and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after numerous outstanding performances. She was the judge. Werner said, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner from this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show in the wake of the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil got a call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
